Full Body Tracking Strap Placement Guide

Full body tracker wear order and pre-calibration placement checklist

Reliable full body tracking strap placement starts with a repeatable sequence: finish the powered-on tracker calibration, confirm each assigned role, put the trackers on in the same order, match mounting orientation to the way each device is worn, test standing and sitting, and then run mounting calibration.

This page is the pre-calibration checklist. For exact hip, waist, and foot locations, use the body-location reference. For strap fit, tension, clothing contact, or sliding, use the VR tracker strap fit guide.

Start with assigned roles

SlimeVR uses the role assigned to each physical tracker to understand which body area it represents. Before wearing the trackers, confirm that the devices shown in SlimeVR match the trackers you intend to use and that left and right roles are not swapped.

A small removable label can make this step faster. Labels such as chest, hip, left upper leg, and right lower leg help you repeat the same assignment without identifying every tracker again. The label does not configure anything; it simply keeps the physical device and its saved role together.

Also separate the two calibration stages. SlimeVR’s quick-setup documentation says powered-on trackers need to complete calibration on a flat surface. Do that before wearing them. Mounting calibration comes later, after the trackers are attached and their real orientation has been checked.

Use the same wear order every session

There is no single required order for putting trackers on. The useful part is consistency. A fixed order makes it easier to notice a missing tracker, a left/right swap, or a device that feels different from the previous session.

One simple routine is to attach torso trackers first, then the left and right upper-leg pair, the left and right lower-leg pair, and finally any additional points already assigned in your setup. If another order works better for your mobility or room, use that order instead and keep it the same.

  1. Complete powered-on tracker calibration on a flat surface.
  2. Check the saved role and label for each physical tracker.
  3. Attach torso points used by your configuration.
  4. Attach paired leg trackers while checking left and right.
  5. Attach any additional assigned points.
  6. Stand straight and review mounting orientation before calibration.

Do not use strap length alone to decide a body role. The current FBTKit product listing shows multiple strap lengths, but it does not define one universal strap-length-to-body-point map. The assigned role and a stable physical position are the authority for this checklist.

Confirm mounting orientation

Body role answers where a tracker is used. Mounting orientation answers which way the device faces while it is worn. SlimeVR’s documentation says the selected orientation should match the real tracker orientation while you stand straight. “Forward,” for example, should correspond to the direction you face when looking forward in the headset.

Trackers do not all have to sit on the front of the body. The official documentation allows trackers to be tilted forward or backward or worn on the side. What matters here is that the configured mounting orientation describes the physical orientation you actually use.

Check one tracker at a time. Compare the physical device with its role and orientation in SlimeVR, correct that point if necessary, and then move to the next tracker. Avoid changing every orientation at once because that makes it harder to identify which change fixed the problem.

Run a standing and sitting check

Before mounting calibration, test the positions through ordinary movement. You are checking whether the tracker stays in the same physical relationship to the assigned body area, not trying to diagnose every possible tracking problem.

  • Stand straight and check every role and left/right assignment.
  • Take two normal steps forward and back.
  • Turn left and right.
  • Bend both knees and return to standing.
  • Sit in the chair you plan to use, lean forward, and turn slightly.
  • Stand again and check whether a tracker moved or rotated.

If one point shifts, reposition only that point and repeat the same movement. If the issue is clearly tension, clothing friction, or sliding, stop this checklist and use the dedicated strap fit guide. If a chair presses a tracker out of place, adjust the physical position before calibration rather than calibrating around the chair contact.

Calibrate only after placement is stable

Once roles, wear order, orientation, and movement checks are stable, continue to mounting calibration. SlimeVR’s quick-setup guide notes that automatic mounting can cause problems when it is performed incorrectly and recommends the manual process for new users. Follow the current wizard shown by your installed SlimeVR version.

After calibration, do one brief movement check in SlimeVR before opening VRChat. If one point looks wrong, return to that point’s role, physical position, and mounting orientation. If several points are wrong or the setup sequence is incomplete, use the broader setup and calibration workflow. New users can follow the beginner calibration routine. For software, Wi-Fi, charging, and VRChat preparation, use the SlimeVR setup checklist for VRChat.

If the same leg slowly moves away from the expected pose after a clean placement check, do not tighten every strap or change every role. Record which point moves and continue with the VR leg drift checklist. Placement is one checkpoint in that diagnosis, not proof of the cause.

Use this pre-calibration checklist

  • Powered-on trackers completed calibration on a flat surface.
  • Every physical tracker has the intended saved role.
  • Left and right trackers are not swapped.
  • Trackers were attached in the usual wear order.
  • Configured mounting orientation matches the real device direction.
  • Every point stayed in place through standing, steps, turns, sitting, and standing again.
  • Any moved point was corrected and retested by itself.
  • Mounting calibration starts only after the physical setup is stable.

FAQ

What order should I put full body trackers on?

No universal order is required. Use the same order each session, such as torso points first, paired upper-leg trackers, paired lower-leg trackers, and then any additional assigned points. Consistency helps reveal missing or swapped trackers.

Should I calibrate before or after putting on the straps?

Complete powered-on tracker calibration on a flat surface before wearing the trackers. After you attach them, confirm roles and mounting orientation, run standing and sitting checks, and then perform mounting calibration.

How do I confirm SlimeVR mounting orientation?

Stand straight and compare the way each physical tracker faces with its selected mounting orientation in SlimeVR. The configured direction should describe the real device direction, including trackers worn on the side.

What should I test before mounting calibration?

Check roles and left/right assignment, then take a few steps, turn, bend your knees, sit, lean, and stand again. If one tracker moves or rotates, correct that point and repeat the same test before calibrating.
