Mark the usable zone, not the room dimensions
Total floor area is a poor shortcut. A bed, open door, desk corner, rug edge, fan, shelf, and PC cable can remove parts of an otherwise large room. Stand in the real play position without the headset and look down the route your feet and chair will use.
Pick one neutral stance that you can find again. It should let you face the intended virtual direction, reach the controls you need, and return after sitting without stepping over equipment. A rug position or stable floor reference can work; a loose marker that becomes another obstacle cannot.
From neutral, test a slow quarter-turn in both directions, one controlled step, and the arm movement you expect to use. This is a boundary test, not a performance test. If a movement reaches a wall or desk, remove that movement from the session or change the physical route. Keep the headset’s own boundary active and aligned with the cleared area. Run the transition with the headset off: stand at neutral, move to the chair, sit, place both feet naturally, stand, and return. Then repeat with the trackers attached before calibration. Separate charging cables from session cables. Put charging leads away before moving. If the headset is tethered, follow the cable through the largest safe turn and the chair transition. The cable needs enough slack for that route without creating a loop under a foot or chair wheel. There is no universal cable-hanging method for every room, so test the route you actually have.
Separate tracker, headset, lighting, and network checks
Small rooms make it easy to blame every failure on the same thing. Check each layer on its own.
